My name is Natasha Veerasawmy, CEO and Founder of BondedThruCancer. This is my story.
On 13 February 2014, at the age of 38, I was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer. It was an incredibly difficult time. I underwent a full mastectomy, had all my lymph nodes removed under my right arm due to the spread of the cancer, and faced two long years of treatments, including chemotherapy.
Today, I am deeply grateful to say I am no longer receiving treatment. I overcame cancer 100%. And I want you to know: you can too.
During my own journey, I noticed something that truly shook me, so many people were attending appointments alone. I couldn’t stop thinking about how they managed without anyone by their side. No one should face cancer on their own, especially not in the most vulnerable moments of their life.
As I began speaking with others during chemotherapy, I learnt that many were carrying not only their diagnosis but also personal trauma - domestic abuse, grief and isolation. Some simply longed for a hand to hold or someone to talk to. That realisation made something very clear to me: support matters. Deeply. Meaningfully.
And so, lying in my hospital bed, the seed of BondedThruCancer was planted. A charity built from real experience. An organisation created with one purpose: to ensure no one walks this path alone. We're here for you, for your family and for anyone walking through this journey.
WHY CHOOSE US
On 26 September 2014, I launched the BondedThruCancer Buddy System - a heartfelt service that provides a companion to sit with you at your hospital appointments, whether it’s scan day, results day or chemotherapy.
For me, chemotherapy was the hardest part. I knew I had to eat to survive it, so I reached out to restaurants and cafés in different areas and arranged for free or discounted meals for both the diagnosed person and their Buddy Volunteer. It’s about dignity, comfort and making the day just a little bit easier.
At the end of each appointment, we also help with your journey home, because support should never stop at the hospital door.
This initiative, grounded in lived experience, has become a cornerstone of what we do. Over the years, we’ve touched countless lives and continue to do so every day.
